Constellation Architect

Full Time

Have you ever dreamed of launching something you developed into space? Of contributing everything you have learned and everything you will learn to master one of the most challenging tasks in engineering? Have you ever imagined that an opportunity will come to join a space technology company in its very first months, to leave traces in its culture and to become one of the few people on earth who are almost as close to space as astronauts? If you like these thoughts - we want to talk to you.

A career at REFLEX

We believe that continuous and tireless questioning of the way things are done in our industry is key to revolutionary products and services. Progress requires breaking the rusty paradigms of space technology to create something new on their remains.

REFLEX is the first venture backed small satellite manufacturer in Europe and the only one aiming to build highly sophisticated, software defined, small and medium class platforms (200-500kg) at project turnaround times which are only common for simple CubeSat projects. We will push the boundaries of space engineering to deliver tailored platforms at serial production speeds by carrying modular digital engineering, software defined capabilities and cutting-edge production and assembly technologies to the extreme.

As one of our first employees you will have a major impact on the future of the company and will participate in its success. You will build the framework for our future day to day business and contribute to the genesis of one of the most motivating and inclusive company cultures. By joining REFLEX, you will leave your footsteps in the history of spaceflight.

Your Role and your Team

As the Constellation Architect of REFLEX aerospace, you will be responsible for the baseline design of satellite constellations for us and for our customers. Your designs and calculations will allow us to explore the mission specific trade space and to balance performance and costs of the respective constellation. You will create repeatable design patterns to enable Reflex to come up with baseline constellation designs very quickly. You will support study and bidding activities as well as mission operations and decommissioning. You will contribute to reducing the operational overhead of satellite constellations through automation from the very beginning.

Your Day to Day

  • Select the tools to be used for constellation simulations, fill the gaps with self developed software

  • Design multi orbit remote sensing and communication constellations

  • Calculate coverage maps, revisit rates, link budgets and more

  • Select launch and deployment strategies

  • Prepare deorbiting and collision avoidance maneuvers

  • Deliver in depth analytics to support decision making

  • Create tools and documentation to streamline the constellation design process

  • Support the satellite operations team with day-to-day commanding and anomaly resolution

What you bring

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics or mathematics

  • 3+ years of experience in a space mission design role or GNC engineering role with strong understanding of orbital mechanics, modeling and simulation, and software development

  • Software development experience in C++ or Python

  • Trajectory optimization for orbital maneuvering

  • General familiarity with the disciplines necessary for spacecraft flight including; Structures, Propulsion, Avionics, GNC, Flight Software, Dynamics, Launch and Mission Operations, and Integration. Practical experience in the real-world development of these systems is highly desired

  • Fluent English language skills are essential, Fluent German or any other language would be beneficial

  • Willing to relocate to Berlin would be a plus

Life at REFLEX

You are joining us as part of our early core team. We are currently based in Berlin in a dedicated office in one of the most famous and vibrant CoWorking communities of the City – the Factory Görlitzer Park. A factory membership comes automatically with your contract – and once COVID19 is over it will include even more benefits – such as yoga and meditation sessions. From November on we will relocate to a 400m2 space in Berlin Friedrichshain where we will develop our first plattform. We are also planning to establish manufacturing and testing facilities in Bavaria, where we already have an office.

We strongly believe in the power of diverse teams. We think that innovation is born through interaction and exchange of people with different backgrounds. We are an equal opportunity employer and welcome applications from all qualified individuals regardless of ethnicity, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.
